With three days there is room for what most people leave out – and for a trip into the surrounding area.
Days 1 and 2
As in the two-day route: first the city with both Sassi, the cathedral and the cistern, then the gorge and the Murgia.
Day 3 – a decision
Three options, depending on your interests:
- Deeper into the city: the rock churches you skipped, plus Casa Noha and the Cripta del Peccato Originale outside town.
- Out into Apulia: Alberobello with its trulli or the coast at Polignano a Mare, both about an hour away.
- Slowly: a cooking class in the morning, a wine tasting in the afternoon, the terraces once more in the evening.
What three days make possible
Above all repetition: seeing the same spot in different light is not a wasted item in Matera.
