Round stone houses with conical roofs, packed side by side: the trulli of Alberobello are on the World Heritage list, like Matera.
Alberobello lies in the Valle d’Itria in Apulia, a good hour’s drive from Matera. The trulli are stacked from limestone rubble without mortar – a way of building that exists in this density nowhere else.
The two quarters
Rione Monti is the larger and more touristy, with a shop in almost every trullo. Rione Aia Piccola opposite is noticeably quieter and still lived in – there you get a sense of what life in these houses is like.
When to go
The town is heavily visited. Early morning or towards evening is more pleasant; at midday the crowd pushes through the narrow lanes.
Combine with
Locorotondo and Martina Franca are nearby and make good additions for half a day.
