The best thing about Matera costs nothing: the city itself. What you can see without paying – and what is still worth the ticket.
Without admission
- The Sassi themselves – lanes, steps, terraces, for as long as you like
- The viewpoints: Piazzetta Pascoli, Piazza San Pietro Caveoso, Porta Pistola, the terrace at Palazzo Lanfranchi
- The belvedere on the Murgia – the famous view from across; only getting there costs
- The paths in the Parco della Murgia Materana
- The cathedral and most parish churches of the upper town
- Piazza Vittorio Veneto with the view into the Sasso Barisano
What is worth paying for
Three things are worth the money because they explain what you see outside: a furnished cave dwelling, the Palombaro Lungo and a painted rock church. Together they cost little and take under two hours.
Saving tip
There are combined tickets for several museums and churches. If you plan to visit more than two, ask about them.
