In the Sassi a bicycle stands no chance – but all around it takes you into a landscape that would be too far on foot.
The old town itself consists of steps and steep lanes; no bicycle helps here. Once you are up on the plateau the picture changes: farm tracks, old alignments and quiet roads lead across the Murgia.
Why an e-bike
The height difference between the city and the plateau is considerable, and in summer the sun is merciless. With motor assistance a slog becomes an outing – which is why rental and guided tours are widespread.
Possible destinations
The viewpoints of the Murgia, scattered rock churches in open country, and to the north the plain with its drystone walls and dry valleys.
Practical
Start early, take water, expect gravel sections. If you would rather not put a route together yourself, book a guided tour.
