The old town is a pedestrian area, and the Sassi are in any case. If you come by car, you leave it at the edge – and walk the last stretch.
The historic core of Matera is designated as a restricted traffic zone. Driving in without authorisation risks a fine; besides, the lanes of the Sassi are simply not made for cars – many of them are staircases.
How to go about it
The simplest option is a car park at the edge of the upper town; from there you reach the Sassi in a few minutes on foot. If you are staying at a hotel in the Sassi, ask in advance about access: many houses have an arrangement for delivering luggage.
What to plan for
From the car park to your accommodation the way almost always leads over steps. A wheeled suitcase is a poor choice here.
