In the old town you move on foot – everything else is a question of gradient and luggage.
On foot
Matera is small: from the upper town into the Sasso Caveoso is a matter of minutes. The effort is not in the distance but in the height difference – almost every route runs over steps. Sturdy shoes are advice not for hikers but for everyone.
City buses
There is a bus network, mainly linking the newer districts on the edge of town with the centre. For visitors staying in the Sassi it hardly matters.
Taxis
Taxis exist but are not as numerous as in larger cities; you usually order one by phone or through your accommodation. Useful on arrival with luggage or for the trip to the belvedere on the Murgia.
Accessibility
The Sassi are difficult for people with limited mobility: steps, cobbles, gradients. The upper town around Piazza Vittorio Veneto is far more accessible, and from the terraces there you see the essentials.
