A town on the edge of a ravine, spanned by an aqueduct bridge – Matera without the crowds.
Gravina lies northwest of Matera and resembles it in its basic layout: a settlement beside a deep ravine, with caves in the rock and an old town above.
The bridge
The best-known structure is the narrow aqueduct that spans the ravine and can be walked across. It too had an appearance in the James Bond film shot in Matera – see Matera on film.
Beneath the town
As in Matera, part of the place lies underground: cave churches, cellars and cisterns can be visited with a guide.
When
Good as half a day on the way towards Bari or Castel del Monte.
