vicinato – International Architecture Workshop
Sunday, 06.09.2026 , 09:00
until Sunday, 13.09.2026
25 architecture students from the EU spend a week working on four abandoned “vicinati” in the Sassi – the neighbourhood courtyards from which the old town is built. With an accompanying public programme.
“vicinato” is an international architecture workshop run by Matrici APS. For one week, 25 architecture students from countries of the European Union work in Matera – on questions of built heritage and the culture it expresses.
The focus is on the vicinato itself: the neighbourhood courtyard that makes up the Sassi and still defines their settlement pattern today. Through talks, lectures and work at the drawing table, four designs are developed to revive the same number of abandoned vicinati. At the end, the work is presented to the public and handed over to local stakeholders who can take it further.
Accompanying public programme:
- 7 September, 5.30 pm, Palazzo dell’Annunziata: “Madre Matera – The Rebirth of the Sassi”, a conversation with Raffaello De Ruggieri and Francesco Foschino, moderated by Raffaele Vitulli
- 8 September, 6 pm, Momart Gallery: “Culture as a Form of Renewal”, with Momart, Atomico Progetti and TAM, moderated by Gaia Martin, followed by an aperitivo
- 12 September, 4 pm: final presentation
The workshop is supported by, among others, the Circolo La Scaletta, the University of Basilicata, the Fondazione Matera Basilicata 2019, the Association of Architects of the Province of Matera, the Basilicata Region and the City of Matera.
